A breeding summer visitor to most parts of the county; inhabiting open woodland, scattered trees on rough pasture and clear-felled areas.

First arrivals, 1 male, Cencoed-uchaf, Cwmbach, 9 April; at Gwenffrwd Reserve, 12 April 14 pairs bred on CBC plot, Rhandirmwyn, c.f. 6 in 1976.

First, Glynhir, Llandybie, 4 April, last, Rhandirmwyn, 7 September. More information regarding distribution and numbers would prove interesting.

First, Myddfai, 19 April, last Rhandirmwyn, 2 September.

First and last Gwenffrwd Reserve, 15 April & 11 September Average density there of 1 pair per 1.5 hectares of woodland.

First, Burry Port, 3 April last, Gwenffrwd Reserve, 9 September. Favours bracken and bush covered slopes on wooded hills, but at least 3 pairs, Pembrey Forest.

First, Porthyrhyd, Llanwrda; Bethlehem; Llandovery, 14 May, last there, 31 August.

First arrival, Gweunydd Cochion, Tumble, 28 March, an early date, last, Rhandirmwyn, 6 September.

First arrival, near Llandovery 11 April. Appeared in smaller numbers than usual at Rhandirmwyn.

The first spring record was of 1 singing at Cors Goch, Llanllwch on 1st May. Between 15-20 pairs bred on the Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve and 5 males were seen at Pembrey Forest on 8th May.

The first arrival date was at Cynheidre on 9th April whilst at Cynnant, Cynghordy 20 pairs bred on 60 acres of hillside.

The first arrival date was a singing male at Gelli Aur on 10th April. Seventy three pairs bred on the Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve and 3 pairs at Ty’n y Waun, Myddfai.

The first spring record was of 1 at Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve on 8th April. Twenty four pairs were located during a sample plot count at this site.

The only notable count was of 50+ in a mixed flock of Skylarks and Meadow Pipits at Cynnant, Cynghordy on 30th July.

An early individual was noted at Maesydderwen on 4th April. On the Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve, 14 pairs were located on a sample plot count (cf 24 in 1995). A gathering of 26 was noted at Cynghordy on 9th September.

An early individual was noted at Gelli Aur on 10th April.

The first spring birds (2) turned up at Rhydcymerau on 18th April.

The first bird observed was a singing male at Pembrey Forest on 8th April. Ten pairs were counted on a sample plot at the Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve where the 8-year mean was 4.2 pairs.

Singles at Pembrey Forest on 17th April; Llyn Llech Owain on 18th; Cynheidre on 25th April and Broad Oak on 2nd May (Migration Watch).

First noted, at Rhydcymerau on 14th April. Later on 3 pair were singing on 24 acres there. 1 at Dinas; 2 at Penclacwydd and 1 at Llyn Lech Owain on 9th, 11th and 12th May respectively. The maximum of only 3, at Usk Reservoir on 26th May, Last reported at Rhydcymerau, on 16 August.

Territories identified at Castell Craigyrwyddon, Crychan Forest, Cam Goch (2), Glasfynydd Forest (2), Usk Reservoir (5) and Gweunydd Cochion.

At RSPB Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve 26 breeding territories were located. The first Spring migrant was recorded at Gelli Aur April 16th.

Only reported from 4 sites in the breeding season.
