A widespread resident breeder in woodland habitats.
Reduced numbers noted following January cold spell.
Widespread, pair raised 2 in barn at Llansawel.
4+ pairs Rhandirmwyn reserve. 2 consecutive unsuccessful attempts to breed in same barn at Cynghordy.
3+ pairs nested, Castle Woods, Llandeilo, none apparently successful. 1 was of the grey phase variety.
8 pairs bred on Gwenffrwd Reserve, one in a Goosander box.
Confirmed breeding in 13 districts. Between 5-10 pairs bred Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserves.
Rhos Llangeler: at least 12 individuals calling regularly during September.
Breeding was confirmed at Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve – c10 pairs and Llyn Llech Owain.
Breeding was confirmed at Cynghordy and was noted as being common in all woods at Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve with approximately 15 pairs. Birds were also noted at Upper Lliedi Reservoir 17th April and Llyn Llech Owain 22nd November.
Breeding was confirmed at Pentrepoeth, Lower Lliedi Reservoir and Stradey Woods.
An estimated 10 pairs bred on the Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve.
Two pairs bred at Abbey Woods, Whitland.
Five pairs reported from the coniferous Caio Forest in the breeding season.
At Penclacwydd 2 were present in January – February.
At Pendacwydd, where it is scarce, there was one on 16th January, in the Millennium Wetland area and one was seen on several occasions in November.
At least 5 pairs at south Crychan Forest.
3 calling at Pwllau, Taliaris on 4th April. Scarce at Penclacwydd, 1 was occasionally noted from October to December. A Goshawk killed 1 at Cynghordy on 16th December.
An individual mobbed a Barn Owl at Rhydcymerau on 18th October and 15th December and a female ‘… sat from 28/03 to 02/05 in box, then deserted: clutch failed…’.

Reported from 4 sites. One was seen to take prey at 1pm at Salem on May 15th.
Amazingly only reported from three sites.
Seriously under recorded with records received from only 2 sites.
