A widespread breeding resident on rough pasture and moorland. More numerous on coasts in winter.

Numbers more reduced than usual. Largest aggregations only of 25, Pibwrlwyd, 1 January; and near Clunderwen, 5 February; 24 near Whitland, 9 February.

No passage data. Small winter parties of 33, Pembrey Burrows, 28 February; 28, Bynea, 20 November; c.50 Ffarmers, 19 December is noteworthy, since numbers, normally meagre in upland areas in winter.

Odd records of birds on moorland during winter but bulk do not arrive there until end of March Strong passage noted on coast, 20 March and 16 September. Maximum c70, near Meidrim, 6 June.

The only count received was of c100 at Pendine Burrows on 18th October.

Parties of 100 at Cynnant, Cynghordy on 3rd September and 40 at Morfa-uchaf, Ferryside on 19th September were probably passage birds. The only other count was of 40 at Brook Farm, Pendine on 4th November.

Early winter records were 45 at Carreg Cennen on 23rd January, and 200 at Ginst Point on 21st February. Several hundred birds (with Pied and White Wagtails) at Banc-y-Lord on 10th March were probably passage birds. Breeding birds arrived back at Gwenffrwd Reserve on 7th March. Autumn passage records at Cynnant, Cynghordy were 500 flying south on 4th October and 180 on 9th. A few on high ground near Llyn y Fan Fach in mild weather on 15th December, was unusual as this species normally vacates the uplands in winter.

Notable counts included 60 at Llanmiloe in February; 100+ at Cynnant, Cynghordy on 30th July and 180 at Llangadog on 16th October.

During the Mynydd Du survey 310 birds were recorded in 10 selected 1km. squares. Elsewhere the only notable counts were of 250 at Cynnant, Cynghordy on 1st October and of 35 at Taliaris on 27th November.

The best counts were of 35 near Ginst Point on 27th January, 60 at Llanedi on 17th March and 25 near Brook Farm, Pendine on 12th November.

A group of 100 were seen at Cynghordy on 26th September with about 150 at Penrhyngwyn on 12th October and another 100 at Llandovery on 16th November.

The only notable counts were of 30 at Taliaris on 11th October and 50 at Ynys y borde, Llandovery on 5th November.

Three records: 60 in March at Penclacwydd; 50 at Pwllau, Taliaris on 25th September and 16 at Talley on 19th December.

12 at Croesyceiliog on 31st January. 5, Bancyffordd, 20th February. In a mixed flock also holding c20 chaffinches and c30 Linnets at Mynydd Pencarreg on 1st September c25 seen.

20 Usk Reservoir December 9th. 41 males singing from 19 sites in the breeding season.

27 Carway February 1st and 46 Ffoslas on the same date. In the summer 7 singing males located in the Tywi valley.

Large counts as follows: 200 Mynydd Myddfai September 10th, 200 Garreg Lwyd September 16th and 500 Cynnant,Cynghordy October 4th. Apart from one singing on the River Loughor June 1 st no breeding records were received.

The most notable record was of 200 Garreg Lwyd September 6th.
