A widespread breeding resident. Large flocks occur along the coast in winter.

The only count was of 150 at Pendine Burrows on 17th September.

As with the Goldfinch, the Linnet is primarily a summer visitor to most of inland Carmarthenshire, with breeding birds likewise arriving in Mar-April, when heavy passage is witnessed on the coast e.g. the c.150 at Machynys on 3rd March The 50 birds at Penclacwydd on 18th August, the 100 at Three Lords, Pendine on 4th October and the 50 at Machynys on 17th October were probably passage birds, whilst the 200 at Cydweli Quay on 21st December represent a wintering flock.

There were a few records of noteworthy aggregations in the early winter period: 100 at North Dock, Llanelli on 2nd January and 120 at Cydwelion 17th January. Spring passage records included c.100 on East Marsh, Ginst Point on 6th April and c.150 at Bancyfelin on 14th April. There were many records of substantial flocks (50-300 birds) in the post-breeding season/autumn passage (July-October) period, primarily along the coast, but also at some inland sites. These included 200 at Dinefwr Ponds on 11th September and 300 near the Witchett Pool in October.

The only notable count was of 85 at Machynys on 16th August. More records of post-breeding parties are required for this declining farmland finch.

There were 9 breeding and 11 non-breeding records in the Mynydd Du survey (including part of Breconshire).

The only notable flocks were of 77 at Horsebox Pond, Pwll on 3rd January and 50 at Machynys on 21st.

Notable flocks included 600 in a stubble field at Three Lords, Pendine on 5th January, 100 at Machynys on 24th August and 200 at Broad Oak on 18th September.

Three pairs bred at the new Millennium Wetland at Penclacwydd. The only count received was of 35 at Llangadog on 16th August. More records of post-breeding flocks would be useful.

There were 50+ at the old Power Station site, Burry Port on 10th November.

In September there were flocks of 30 at Bronwydd on 2nd, 120 at Llangadog on 9th, 60 near Llandeilo on 11th, 35 at Penclacwydd on 16th and 180 at Machynys on 23rd.

80-100 noted at Cydweli on 1st September. On 27th September there were 100 at Upper Loughor. At Cynghordy on 4th October, 14. They bred at Cynnant. They also bred in scrub/gorse in the eastern scrapes at Penclacwydd, where there were 2 pairs.

Around 200 frequented Telpyn Farm on 6th January. At or near the same place on 18th in a setaside field 200-250 manned one tree. Autumn numbers were: 20/25 at Ffosddu on 6th September; 50/60 at Dinefwr Park on 7th October and 20+ at Cwm Celyn Farm near the Tâf estuary on 4th November.

About 100 at Kidwelly on 4th January, 30 on 19th February. First returning spring bird seen at Pwllau, Taliaris on 27th March, 15 there on 8th April. 8 near Burry Port on 15th. Approximately 30, with c20 Chaffinches and c25 Meadow Pipits at Mynydd Pencarreg on September. 8 at Llandilo-abercowin on 5th. There were c80 at Mynydd Llanybydder on 23rd September.

Eight breeding territories located at Ragwen Point June 25th. Elswhere a possible 32 pairs at 20 sites. 45 Kidwelly Quay September 30th.

A pair reared 4 young at Pentre Davis and 27 pairs were located at Marros Mountain and the Ragwen/Telpyn Point area May 15th. A further 13 pairs were located at 9 sites. 30 at Cynghordy September 12th.

The largest flock reported was 110 Kidwelly Marsh January 3rd.

Large flocks recorded were 30 Cynghordy January 12th, 45 Cwm Ifor July 5th, 75 Cilsan Bridge August 21st, 80 Ginst Point November 18th and 60 Llanelli November 25th.
