A widespread, local resident breeder in old woodland, derelict buildings and quarries.

Confirmed breeding at Cynghordy. Present in breeding season at Stradey Woods.

Winter groups of 10 at Pendine Burrows on both 22nd January and 17th February.

Confirmed breeding at Cynghordy and birds were noted during the breeding season at Ginst Point and Pontyberem. Autumn flocks of 10 individuals were noted at Llangadog on 29th September and at Three Lords, Pendine on 15th October.

There was no confirmed breeding records this year, but notable counts included 8 at Ffrwd Fen on 26th February and 9 at Llangadog on 29th March.

The only notable count was of 43 at Furnace on 10th February. Elsewhere up to 3 were seen at Ginst Point in late spring/summer and 2 were at Pwll on 1st May.

Noted in the breeding season at Ffrwd Fen, Pontynyswen and Dinefwr Park. The only records outside this period were 5 at Stradey Woods on 14th January, 13 at Dryslwyn on 29th, 4 at Ginst Point on 6th August and 8 at Taliaris on 26th. More records of this species would be appreciated.

Noted in the breeding season near the Witchett Pool and Dinefwr Park. The only notable count was of 12 at Broad Oak on 6th September.

Recorded in the breeding season at Middleton Hall, Broad Oak, Llangadog, Cynghordy, Ashpits Ponds, Crwbin, Taliaris, Cydweli Marsh and Cwm Hiraeth. Flocks included 17 at Broad Oak on 7th January and 10 at Llangadog on 6th November.

Records of paired birds during the breeding season emanated from Taliaris, Plas Mawr near Tycroes, Golden Grove, Cilsan Bridge and Aberglasney. At least 18 were feeding on a stubble field at Hafod Neddyn, Broad Oak on 16th August.

The best count of the early winter period was of 5 at Llangadog on 20th February. The highest counts of the year were from Hafod Neddyn, Broad Oak with 12 on 3rd September and 50, feeding on stubbles, on 2nd November. Up to 2 birds noted at several sites in the Taliaris area from February to October, with the best count being of 4 on 20th October. Other records were of 2 at Pentre Parr on 27th June, 1 at Dinefwr Castle on 19th July and 14 at Llangadog Common on 26th December.

At the year’s opening 2 were at Cilsan Bridge. 1 was at Cynghordy on 16th and 17th January. Pembrey Airfield was home to 2 on 19th of the month. A day later there were a good numbers, 32 at Cilsan Bridge. 10 at Gallt-y-Gyrnig, Cynghordy was the only other January record. 3 were at Pyliaucochion. Taliaris on 23rd February. Two lots of 2 made up the last of the annual sightings, at Cynnant on 1st June and Ffosddu on 20. 21 singing, if it can be called singing, males were counted in Dinefwr Park. The Deer Park probably holds the greatest number of any site in Carmarthenshire.

A nest was discovered at Maesdulais quarry, Drefach on 24th April. At Ty Pica a pair raised 2 young in a shed. There were 3 in Stradey Woods on 5th May and 2 in maize stubble at Saron on 14th November.

1 at Cilsan on 19th February. A nest was found at Abergwili on 27th July but no news of any outcome. 1 at Pyllau-cochion, Taliaris on 15th September. 1, Rhydcymerau, 23rd September and 12’h October. 3 flyovers at Penclacwydd on 3rd November, 2 at Golden Grove on the same day and the maximum, of 12 at Morfa-Bacas on 7th November. Recorded in May only, at Pwllau. Taliaris.

6 Park House, Maesydderwen, Llangennech April 18th, Marros May 15th, 4 White Mill July 3rd, Dryslwyn July 15th and pair nesting in Llangynog Quarry July 18th.

The largest group reported was 20 Cynghordy March 29th.

Breeding season records were received from only 3 sites but this is more a case of under recording than extreme rarity. At Pwll regular flocks were noted in December with the larger counts 26 on the 11th and 34 on the 31st.
