Widespread but declining summer visitor.
First arrival, Gwenffrwd Reserve, 21 April with a late straggler there, 11 September.

Bred at Bronllwyn, Ammanford where 1, fostered in a Dunnock’s nest, fledged on 2nd July. Breeding season records from Castle Woods: 1 on 3rd May, Ffrwd Fen: 1 on 8th May, Marros Mountain: 1 on 27th May.
The earliest spring record was a male at Mynydd Llangyndeyrn on 15th April.
The first arrival was 23rd April when a bird was recorded at Gwenffrwd/Dinas followed by another the next day at Llyn Llech Owain. Five or six males were calling at Gwenffrwd in late May.
The first spring record was on 28th April at Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve, where 4 pairs summered. Other records came from Pontiets, Llyn y Fan Fachand Rhos Pwllygawnen (2), with a juvenile at Cynnant, Cynghordy on 30th August.
The first spring record was on 18th April on Mynydd Llansadwrn.
Five pairs summered at the Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve (cf 4 in 1995).Other records originated from Witchett Pool (2-3 daily in May/June), Ffrwd Fen, Penclacwydd, Upper Lliedi Reservoir, Horsebox Pond, Taliaris, Pembrey Forest(2), Burry Port and Pembrey Country Park.
The first spring record was of 1 at Penclacwydd on 12th April.
There were an estimated 5 males in the breeding population at Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve. Other breeding season records were received from Rhydcymerau, at the source of the Loughor, Llyn Llech Owain, Witchett Pool, Five Roads, Trimsaran, Mynydd y Garreg, Burry Port and Mynydd Penbre and Pembrey Forest, with a group of 5 at the latter site on 19th June.
First bird of the year was at Rhydcymerau on 20th April. 4 pairs at Gwenffrwd and breeding season records from Trichrug, Gors Carmel, Cynheidre, Mynydd-y-garreg, Pembrey Country Park (2), Gwdig (Burry Port), Abbey Woods, Whitland, Pembrey Salting’s and Taliaris.
Records of calling males came from Garn Coch, Mynydd-y-Garreg, Garreg Lwyd (Pembrey), Gwynfe, Taliaris, Trap, and Caio. One immature was noticed at Penclacwydd on 13 July with at least 4 in Pembrey Forest on 3rd August.
There were records of single birds at Pembrey Forest on 28th April; Glyn Tai Pond on 8th May; Mynydd Mawr, Tumble on 24th and Mynydd Cerrig on 24th.
Spring’s herald was first reported, appropriately, on 1″ May, near Witchett Pool. On the 5th 1 was calling at Pwllau, Taliaris. There were singles also at Pendaclwydd from 11th to 19th May: Morfa Bacas on 3rd June; Pendacwydd between 11th and 14th June and Berwick roundabout on 2nd July.
Not unknown, but certainly very early, was a bird reported from Dolau Fan on 26th March. The next was at Lanlas on 19th April (Migration Watch). 5 were at Gweunydd Cochion, Tumble on 3rd June. Others at Gwynfe; Pwllau, Taliaris; Ffosddu; Brechfa
Forest; Pembrey Forest; Pendine; Morfa Bychan; Bancyfford and Cwm Hiraeth. Ffosddu got almost no peace, the ‘singing’ – starting at about 4am and going on until after 10pm, day after day!
All singles; Pembrey Forest on 18th April; first heard at Rhydcymerau and Ffosddu on 22nd April; Mynydd Du on 29th April; Gweunydd Cochion, Tumble on 1st May; Aberglasney and Garreg Lwyd on 10th Llyn Lech Owain on 12th Taliaris on 14th; Penclacwydd on 21st; Sugar Loaf on 25th and the last of the year, a juvenile at Cynnant, Cynghordy on 17th September.
The earliest was one at Carmel April 8th. Thereafter reported from 5 sites. A juvenile Cynghordy August 16th.

6 breeding territories were located at the RSPB Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve. Only reported from 4 other localities.
