An abundant and widespread resident breeder. Also a winter visitor forming large flocks.

The only counts received were of 150 at Telpyn on 6th March and of several hundred at Pendine Burrows in October.

Counts of autumn/winter flocks were; Llansteffan: 200 on 13th January; Cynghordy: 200 in a weedy field of resown grass on 20th September Llandeilo-abercywyn: 200 in a stubble field on 6th November and 100 on 4th December Castle Woods, Llandeilo: 200 on 22nd November.

In Brechfa Forest a total of 18 were noted singing. See Wren for details.

Noteworthy counts were made, at both coastal and inland sites e.g. 300 on maize stubble at Gelli Aur on 16th October and 142 at Penybedd on 26th January.

Large flocks of 300 birds were noted at Usk Reservoir on 11th September and Dinefwr Park on 27th December.

The largest flocks reported were 100 at Dinefwr Park on 7th January and 200 at Machynys on 28th January.

The only notable flocks were of 250 at the Witchett Pool on 10th February and 200 on 5th September.

The only notable flocks were of 300 at Hafod Neddyn, Broad Oak on 1st February, 120 at Llandovery on 10th October, 150 at Pantarsais on 15th, 50 at Llanarthne on 15 and 120 at Glanrannell on 22nd.

A flock of 70 at Cilsan Bridge on 5th November was the only record received.

100 at Telpyn Farm on 6th January. At Dryslwyn on 21st January there were 30. During Garden Watch a maximum of 14 was recorded, on 2nd April. Up to 12 availed themselves of the feeders in the garden of Cefnilwydcoed. Penybanc, with an average of 6 being seen.

12 at Bancyffordd on 20th February. About 20, with c30 Linnets and c25 Meadow Pipits at Mynydd Pencarreg on September. 12 at Ffosddu on 24th October, 16 there on 12th November and 18 on 19th. ‘…Several hundreds passed through…’ at Penclacwydd, from 2nd to 4th November. At Telpyn Point c100 on 7th. 100+ at Pembrey Country Park on 26th December.

157 singing males reported from 49 sites.

A possible 68 pairs located from 25 sites.

81 breeding territories located at the RSPB Gwenffrwd/Dinas Reserve. 55 at Penclacwydd March 17th is a notable count.

Large winter flocks reported were 50 west Taliaris January 1 st, 50 Pwll December 1 lth and 75 there December 17th. The most impressive count was c400 Llanfynydd December 16th.
