A passage and winter visitor. Numbers vary considerably from year to year.

Only very small numbers during both winter periods. Maxa, 4, Talley, 25 January; 10, Llangadog, 30 November.

c.200, Llanfynydd, 17 January; otherwise only 1, Rhydcymerau, 29 January. Late year, 70, Burry Port, throughout December; 38, Llanelli, 13 December; otherwise 1, Gwenffrwd Reserve, 27 October, and up to 3 during November-December at Pembrey – Felinfoel – Bynea area and Gwenffrwd Reserve.

c70, Burry Port from January up to 1 March, up to 20, Llangennech, Llanelli, Castle Woods, Llandeilo and Pembrey Country Park. No late year records.

Scarce early year, with maximum 7, Llandeilo, 14 January. 250+, Llanboidy, regular mid-October – end December.

Early year, ones, two’s and threes, Machynys, Pwll and Llandovery, January/February; c90 Burry Port, 9 February; c250 Llanboidy, 8 February; c70 near Tavernspite, 20 April. Late year, poor beechmast crop, singles, Castle Woods, Llandeilo, 11, 16 & 26 October; 2, Gwenffrwd Reserve 26th; 3, on 31 October; 2, near Ystradffin, 12 November.

Apart from flocks of c60, Pembrey Forest; Trostre, 17 January there were further sightings of up to 15 in the South-east. with singles near Idole and Ffairfach, the last 3 seen, Pembrey Forest, 28 March. The only late year record was 1, heard, Castle Woods, Llandeilo, 16 October.

2, Ferry Point, Ferryside, 10 February; 4 in mixed flock, Trelech, 21 October; male, near Llyn Pencarreg 3 November.

Ones and twos January/February Felinfoel, Upper Lliedi Reservoir, Cydweli and Llandovery; October/December at Ginst Point and Pembrey Forest.

Small numbers, Penclacwydd WWT, January, otherwise up to 3, mainly singles at Pembrey Forest, Ginst Point, Felinfoel and Swiss Valley, January/February; 1 Gelli Aur, 4 November, the only late year record.

Recorded in spring at Telpyn: 2 on 29th Feb, Pendine Burrows: 1 on 2nd March, Morfa Bychan: 5 on 15th March and Llanelli: female on 4th April. In autumn recorded at Dinefwr Ponds: 2 on 11th October, Ffordd y Wagen, Pwll: 1 on 11th October, Llangain: 1 on 28th October, Cynghordy: 5 on 2nd November and Penclacwydd: male on 16th November. These were the only records of a poor year and probably relate to passage birds.

Four Jan-April records; Penclacwydd: male on 17th January, Laugharne-Pendine Burrows: male on 24th January, Rhandirmwyn: 1 on 1st March and Burry Port 2 on 20th April.

Recorded in autumn from 30th October with 1 at Ffarmers and 2 at Rhandirmwyn Quite regular from 22nd November under beeches at Castle Woods, Llandeilo where a max. of 50 were present on 21st December. Three were seen feeding on beech mast at Llandovery on 21st November and individual birds at Penclacwydd on 21st November and Gelli Aur on 25th November.

Two records from the beech clumps at Dinefwr Castle Woods – 22 on 1st January and 10 on 6th February. Ten were seen in a young conifer plantation at Rhos in the north of the county on 9th January. A single bird was also seen at Cydweli Quay on 31st January. There were 2 records of single males at Penclacwydd on 1st January and 6th November.

First winter period records were a female at Penclacwydd on 2nd January, 1 in a Ffairfach garden on 16th February, males at Burry Port on 4th March and Brechfa on 8th and 1 at Llansteffan on 14th.

During the second winter period a steady build up in numbers started on 31st October with 5 at Llandovery, followed by a male at Telpyn Woods on 4th November, singles at Burry Port on 22nd December and 31st, a minimum of 6 at Broad Oak on 14th December, up to 4 at Penclacwydd from 26th – 31st December, 1 at Cydweli Quay on 31st December and finally large numbers throughout November and December at Dinefwr Park increasing to at least 200 on 27th December.

Following from the large numbers present at Dinefwr Park in late 1995 at least 800 were still there on 7th January. Elsewhere there were singles at Pencarreg on 4th January and Pentrepoeth on 19th, up to 3 at Penclacwydd in January, 2 there on 11th February and 1 on 10th April. The last record of the first winter period was a male at Taliaris on 13th April.

Records for the second winter period were: 1 at Pumpsaint on 23rd October, with 3 there from late October – early November; 4 at Abergwili on 7th November and 8 at Broad Oak on 22nd. December records included singles at Llanelli on 7th and Three Lords, Pendine on 15th, 2 at both Penyfai Lane, Llanelli on 24th and at Usk Reservoir on 28th and 1 at Penclacwydd on 30th.

Records for the first winter period were of 1 at Penclacwydd on 15th, 22nd and 29th January, 250 in a mixed finch flock at Llanwino on 6th February, 1 at Llangynog on 12th March and 4 at Rhydcymerau on 4th April.

End of year records were of a female at Penclacwydd on 19th and 21st October, at Broad Oak on 21st, 1 at Three Lords, Pendine on 26th and a male at Penclacwydd on 5th and 7th November.

First winter period records were 1 at Marros on 31st January, 2 at garden feeders in Ffairfach in January, and 1 at Cynghordy on 6th February. A gathering of around 50 were located in Dinefwr Deer Park on 24th February and 4 were noted flying north east at Rhydcymerau on 2nd April.

The second winter period saw a female at Penclacwydd on 14th October, 2 at Three Lords, Pendine, on 1st November, a male at Penclacwydd on 8th November and finally another female at Penclacwydd on 8th December and 23rd.

Only very small numbers were seen with 1 at Penclacwydd in January and February with 2 there in March and another single at Taliaris in the same month. During the second winter period singles were seen at Cynghordy and Broad Oak in October. At bird tables in Cynghordy and Ffairfach 2 birds appeared on 10th and 15th November respectively. The only coastal record during the late year was an individual seen at Penrhyngwyn on 14th November.

The only records were from the first winter period. At Hafod Neddyn, Broad Oak there were 2 on 2nd January, 20 on 1st February, 15 on 16th March and 1 on 13th April. Elsewhere, there was 1 at Penclacwydd on 19th January and 4 on 26th February and a female at Dinefwr Park on 18th March.

Near Cilsan Bridge, in stubble. 2 were seen on 5th November. 1 female was recorded at
Penclacwydd on 11th and 23rd December.

Five records: 2 at High Grove, Pembrey Mountain on 3rd January; 1 at Telpyn Farm and 1 at Three Lords, Pendine both on 6th; 1 at Pendine on 13th February and 1 at Salem on 1st and 3rd April.

A male at Pencader on 27th October, for 2 at Penygroes on 7th November. 1, Penclacwydd, 12th. A male at Salem on 16th. 1. Pembrey Country Park, 26th December.

Penclacwydd January, Maesteg, Capel Seion February 18th – 20th and Cwmllwyd, Gwynfe February 28th – March 7th.

Singles at Brechfa February 10th, Penclacwydd February 16th & 26th and March 17th, Llansteffan March 22nd and Cwmann December 8th.

A really good year for this species: Kidwelly January lst, near Brechfa 6 February 11th ,2 Penclacwydd February l2th & 19th, Machynys October 22nd, 2 Cilsan Bridge November 4th and 2 Llanfynydd on the same date, Dryslwyn November 22nd, 20 Llanfynydd November 23rd, Penclacwydd November 26th, c25 Ffarmers November 29th, c100 Rhydcymerau December 7th, 6 Cynghordy December 12th and 50 Llanfynydd December l6th.
